Kites of 2-4 Lines
There has been confusion in the matter of choice between the 4 line and 2 line kites. There is a difference between the 2 and 4 line kites, taking into consideration the comfort levels. The number of lines suitable depends on the control you have on the wings of kite, rather than the tips. The 4-line type will be more suited for the experienced surfers, who maneuver the kite with greater flexibility. 4 line kites are quickly deployable. It is fast and turns swiftly provided you have good control over it. For the beginners the 2 line type will be more suitable, since the newbie’s may not understand the variation at various connection points. If you need to just steer left or right without any extra maneuvers 2 line kites will be a good choice.
Though 4 line kites provide greater flexibility in flight it can be a hindrance at some situations using 4 lines. At gusty wind situations it may be difficult to maintain the stability of kite. There is a probability of the lines getting tangled. Problem arises when deployed from water also. As the number of lines increases, there are wider options for maneuvering and turning. However, it becomes more complex with each increasing pair of lines. If you have been surfing with kites for a long time, you can adapt well and much faster to the 4 line kites. It’s the experience that matters here and of course the skill in maneuvering.
In the initial stages 2 line kites are used for getting accustomed with kite surfing. It can be used to perform simple maneuvers and gradually you can over power the kite. It is difficult to have the power of kite reduced when it is in full fledged sail. It is possible to reduce the speed of flight by flying the kite into the forward window above. Once you get the speed reduced to a considerable level, keeping the kite stable, you can detach the kite safely or bring it down. Be aware of the safe height for landing. The kites with 4 lines harness many parts of kite itself. Each of the lines can be used to control a corresponding wing. You should get the feel of the wings reacting to different inputs through these lines. You can get it right with more time you spend with the kite.
A qualified instructor can aid you in this regard. It is better to practice it at the beach with a good instructor. Maneuver the kite judging your position well or you may get into a situation of deploying the kite and having to re launch it in the waters itself. Be careful while deploying your kite. If this is not done properly the winds may take of the kite with it. All kites come in different sizes depending on our performance and portability requirements. The lengths vary from about 40 meters for the 4 line kites to around 30 meters for the 2 line kites.
