8 Kite Shopping Tips for Kite Boarders

We all need fresh equipment from time to time, so everyone into kitesurfing is going to have to go through this routine once in a while. Why spend more than you have to though? The best way to do your kite shopping is to do it the smart way; pre-planned.

  • The first rule applies to all shopping you do: Know what you need. Yes, it is as simple as that. You can get a great deal for a grip bar when you do not need one, why buy it then? It is not smart to buy something just because you can, what if the equipment is outdated when your current grip bar finally gives way?

  • Just to mix it up, the second is something not many will tell you to do. Buy old gear. It was good enough to be the hot commodity three or four months back, the new editions do not make the last model bad. In fact, there will be times when the brands will change up just for the sake of it, so get deals up to 25% by buying what came out last season.

  • Thirdly, make frequent upgrades. It is easier to sell your old equipment if it is still relatively new, don't wait till it is old enough for nothing but the recycle bin. If you are selling your equipment every few months to upgrade, it will earn you better sale prices as well, cutting down your eventual costs.

  • Second hand equipment does not hurt. There are quite a few people around who will sell their kites when the new models come out. The market is already saturated and lets face it, those are great bargains. Make use of them.

  • Fifth would be to know the prices of items you are intending on buying. It is always best to do your homework first. Shop around and compare prices. While one salesperson will give you a discount to bring the price down, another might have the same as starting price. Don't fall for what the salesman says, choose the best deal.

  • We do have everything a click away these days. You can check prices on the net and also look for better deals there. It is a virtual shop and those websites are not paying shop rents or sales person's commissions or even keeping all the goods in their stocks so they have lower maintenance costs, expect lower prices online and then there is the case of kiteboarding seasons. Check for out of season prices in other areas/countries. Do remember that there will be sites that have shipping free, but read the whole procedure before you buy something online. You do not want to have to pay for the fine print you did not have time to read.

  • Seventh on the list is looking for package deals. It is sensible to buy from one shop instead of going to 3 different ones to get your equipment. If you buy more you have a better chance of discounts. Kiteboarding is a niche sport, they would want customers to come back to them and not go to a competitor, so you have margin to bargain.

  • Before making the final decision of what you are going to purchase, put yourself in resale mode. Would you buy second hand equipment from a brand that is not popular in your area? No. You do not know how it would work. Same would be the thoughts of others when you put your equipment up for sale in a few months so buy a popular brand that will have higher resale value for you.
