THAILAND Film Trivia Notes
Thailand is a mesmerizing exotic setting for all imaginable life situations. Thousands of tourists visit Thailand every year, perhaps because the country has been in the limelight for over half a century. Famed movies were filmed in more than one region of the country, which might account for the Big-Bang-type of tourist development.
Here are some of the films that were partly or entirely filmed in Thailand:
- Around the World in 80 Days (1956)
- The Killing Fields 1984)
- Casualties of War (1989)
- Two Brothers
- Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason
- Star Wars
- The Beach (1999)
- John Rambo (2007)
- American Gangster (2007)
These movies were filmed in or around the areas of Bangkok and Phuket, the most renowned destinations for holidays and sojourns. The picturesque landscapes and clear waters of Thailand are a genuine fascination for the human eye, their presence on Hollywood big screens is hardly surprising.
However, the film series which made Thailand world-famous remains James Bond. The first of the series to have used Thai scenery was The Man With the Golden Gun in 1974. it mainly focused on the Sea Caves in Phang Nga Bay and the rocky mountains of Ko(h) Ta Pu, the Nail Island. Roger Moore’s performance persuades millions of visitors to sign up for island tours, stop by the Sea and Monkey Caves and often enough go for evening cruises (when in a romantic mood and willing to see unusually beautiful sunsets). The second James Bond film to enhance Thailand’s fame was the more recent Tomorrow Never Dies, a mélange of Bangkok and Phuket scenery flashes. Pierce Brosnan appears to be at home among the Thai beaches surrounded by appealing ladies. Both films suggest – as primary motion engine of the James Bond collection – a rush of adrenalin, unique experiences and thrilling trips.
Fortunate circumstances have always aided Thailand to remain in the spotlight as the Cambodian islands are major rivals. It was the incipient Vietnam War that made directors and film crews avoid the Cambodian hot spots and settle for Thai shores. Fate probably guided these events and choices for better reasons. Thailand is indeed a marvelous paradise garden all set for adventure.
